I'm Yours - Jason Mraz

Posted by Atish in

I like the palm muting he uses in this song. And yet again, he seems to be at his best when he's doing the soft numbers.

Wordplay - Jason Mraz

Posted by Atish in

I think I like this guy. I mean 4 posts! He sure seems talented and versatile. And how about this:

"Mraz is also an avocado farmer in California. He is a raw foodist, meaning he only eats uncooked and unprocessed foods."

It's energetic and sounds a bit like hip-hop / rap.

1000 Things - Jason Mraz

Posted by Atish in ,

Ok, this one is very much pop and too soft (even the guitar is so clean). But if you are wondering what I meant by "scat" in my first post on Jason Mraz, listen to this one.
And who cares whether you are too soft or not when you have girls screaming!

A Beautiful Mess - Jason Mraz

The lyrics can hit you hard. There's just his voice and the occasional guitar strum which hold the song together.

You & I Both - Jason Mraz

Posted by Atish in

I've been listening to him for almost a month now. And it took some time for me to decide if I really like him enough to put his songs on my blog. He sounded too soft and pop-ish for me at times. But I think he's got good vocals, scats well and can do the soft, mushy songs very nicely.

You & I - This is the Live, acoustic version though. Needlessly to say, I like it better.

If I Had A Million Dollars - Barenaked Ladies

Posted by Atish in ,

How different is this version from the studio one. Have loved this song since the first time I heard it. This version, though, adds so much more to it. So much spontaneity. And the crowd involvement. What fun it must have been to be there.

The Live Version

It's taken from their album Rock Spectacle, by the way.

The Studio Version.

And don't try and compare the lyrics!

First Train Stop - Griffith Project

Posted by Atish in ,

Another one from Griffith Project. And so different from the earlier one I talked about. This one is characterized by a reggae beat and a very laid back, lazy feel to it. The guitar solo is likely to get stuck with you if you enjoy listening to bluesy tracks.

Dreamer Street - Griffith Project

Posted by Atish in

Just the kind of song I was looking for. A relaxed Friday in office. Nothing to do except find out new songs. Acoustic guitar and a harmonica. How beautiful do those two instruments sound together. It's no Neil Young but I like it nevertheless.

Friday - Goldspot

Posted by Atish in

Managed to chance upon this song in Zee Cafe in the morning and felt like digging it out. If the beginning makes you feel that I have wrongly uploaded an old hindi film track, just hang on for a few seconds.
The Band's lead singer and songwriter is an Indian. So, if you care for the acoustic Hindi version of the song sung by the same guy (Siddharth Khosla), here it is.
The video of the original reminds me of the movie School Of Rock. Nicely done.

Friday

And here's a nice piece on the Band and their story.

Whatcha Gonna Do With A Dog Like That - Susan Raye

Posted by Atish in

I'm getting nostalgic. Here's another one. Sunday mornings. Bright sunshine. Dad playing records. Me just roaming around the house. Not a worry in the world.

A welcome break from Rock. Alternative or Classic.

This song's got a great hook. I don't know exactly what it is, but there's this freshness in her voice which I really like.

L.A. International Airport - Susan Raye

Posted by Atish in

This was probably the first English song I ever heard. So it will always have a special memory for me. That of my father and the HMV record player that we have (Yes, it still works). And childhood and the showcase which had the player and more...

It's probably not the type of music you will frequently find in this blog. But what the heck. I remembered it today and dug it out from the net. It has this nice rhythm to it. I'm hearing it after ages and I still like it.

Rain King - Counting Crows

Posted by Atish in

A very rich sounding acoustic guitar starts the song. And it continues throughout, along with occasional piano notes which form the many layers of this song. Adam Duritz's vocals are complemented beautifully by the backing harmonics. At more than 7 minutes, its almost like a ballad. Didn't like it the first time around but to use the cliche, it has grown on me. It has this nice flowing quality to it which soothes you during a typical office day.

This is the Heineken Music Hall version by the way. I like it much more than the studio version.

Rain King

Turns out, that the inspiration behind the song is Henderson the Rain King. Still, if you are able to interpret the lyrics, let me know.

Nothing Compares To You - Dustin Kensrue

Posted by Atish in

Never liked the Sinead O'Connor version. Never liked these 'kind' of songs. But love the rawness in this version. And the spontaneity. The roughness in his voice with just the guitar in the background lends a different color to it. The stop-start feel in the beginning and the way he interacts with the audience. Would love to be in one such 'concert'. A closed room acoustic one. A single vocalist and his guitar. Telling his stories. Ok I'll stop!.

Nothing Compares

Thanks to Rohan for this one.

And if you care for the Sinead O'Connor version, ( which by the way is also a cover but became hugely popular ) here it is.
